This quilt, with its orange flowers, spikey buds and paddle-shaped leaves, is a fabric interpretation of my favorite Texas blooming cactus, at a time of day with fairly horizontal light. It is not from any commercial pattern or design. I have added a lightly quilted, non-collaged border to represent the rough sides of a primitive, handmade frame to evoke the sensation of rustic, casual art when hung.
This is a collage quilt, with a top assembled from hundreds of pieces of 100% cotton fabric fused to a polyester webbing. It is sandwiched with cotton flannel batting and backed with muslin. Free-motion quilting through all layers in a stipple pattern was done with a regular home sewing machine, using monofilament thread on the front and cotton/polyester on the back. The sprinkling of hand-stitched thorn clusters, added after machine quilting, was done with embroidery floss.
